Glam Up editorial shoot

What a great shoot. I shot this for submission into Frankie magazine whose submission criteria are simple, they want images that don't fit the normal. So with that in mind I had a think about what I could do to capture their intent.

I started to think about documenting a girl getting ready for a night out, trying on outfits and leaving the room in a mess. Then I thought that it wasn't enough so how about shooting it in the studio so it obviously wasn't a room. Still not enough, so how about shooting another camera shooting the woman getting ready. Getting warm. I had the use of a Sinar and I didn't have any film for it but I loved what I saw through the focusing screen so as you can see I ended up setting the shot up for capture with the Sinar and then just photographing the view through the focusing screen.

In Company of Light

This is the shoot I did for Kurv magazine. It is titled "In Company of Light".

I'm pretty happy with the shoot. I'm not sure that it has the 'edge' I'm after and I think that's a combination of things but I'm leaning towards the fact I didn't invoke the best performance from my model. I think this is an experience thing and maybe a little of doubt in my mind whether I was heading in the right direction with this shoot.

Kristian Schuller | Calikartel

I love the first image of this series by Kristian Schuller. I think the flowing dress, the penny farthing and the circus tent really add to create a strong feeling of being in a fantasy playground. The second image works well also with great lighting, models pose in mid flight and the 1920 car.

Andrea Klarin

This short series by Andrea Klarin has captured my attention. The lighting is beautiful and the scene is interesting but not distracting. Somehow the lighting reminds me a a film I watched recently, Sucker Punch. The effect is very 'dreamy' and almost surreal.

Sebastian Kim

I keep seeing the work of Sebastian Kim pop up and I must say his style appeals to me.

He started out by assisting Richard Avedon, a great portrait photographer, then assisted Steven Meisel, a great fashion photographer. He certainly struck gold with those two greats as teachers and you can certainly see a bit of each of them in his work.

Here's his latest shoot:

Smoking in Editorials

It still amazes me that smoking remains a feature of high profile editorials across the world. I know that as an Australian I am fortunate that smoking has been banned in advertisements, pubs, clubs, restaurants and some public areas.

I have noticed that Editorials shot by Australians rarely feature smoking. I presume that this is due to the laws in Australia and the message that the government are portraying about the health effects on smokers. Should the government ban images of smoking in magazines sold within Australia? Where does the control end?

In an interview Carine Roitfeld, an editor of French Vogue Magazine for 10 years talks about the regret she has for using cigarettes in so many of her fashion shoots.

Here's the shoot that got me thinking about this issue. The first shot is beautiful by the way.

A studio based video editorial

Maybe I should be calling them 'motion editorials' as that seems to be the accepted term.

Here's another motion editorial that's shot in the studio and is in contrast to the previous one I posted. This one is a lot slower, and focuses on a different mood. These motion editorials have one added bonus over stills editorials and that is audio. The audio that accompanies the editorial really sets the tone for the whole shoot and goes 90% of the way to dictating the target audience.

Video editorial

I've been looking at video editorial shoots a bit lately and am going to have a play with shooting one.

I stumbled across this one which is a cross between a video editorial and a fashion video, either way I'm hooked. The energy given off by this shoot is amazing and will keep any viewers attention.

Smoke and Mirrors editorial

I recently shot an editorial for consideration in a new magazine starting up called Stray. The submission guideline was for an editorial spread based around 'smoke and mirrors'

I decided to take a literal translation of the theme.

This is my 2nd submission and my 4th editorial I have shot. I am happy with the way I am progressing with my editorials, I just need to get one published now.
