Abstract fashion

I find this image quite intriguing. It reminds me somewhat of cubism for some reason and in particular Picasso's 'Portrait of Jacqueline' painted in 1961. The pure whites, pure blacks, the lighting and the angle all combine to give this abstract image.

'Lost Soul' editorial shoot

I came across an ad calling for submissions to a new magazine starting up 'MYM Magazine. I sent in some samples of my work and they sent me back a basic submission guideline for their first online 'lookbook' edition, a prelude to the printed version to follow. This magazine is a 'Not for Profit' magazine showcasing local Australian fashion.

I couldn't let this opportunity go to waste so a few phone calls later and I had a collection of locally designed clothes, a model, makeup, hair and an assistant.

With the limited time I had to organise and shoot I chose to have a theme that would fit in with the environment I knew, that of the country around Gundaroo. I chose a theme of 'Lost Soul' with a story line attached. A young woman has just lost her life and is stuck in limbo waiting for her partner to join her before moving on the the after life.

The submission guidelines were to fairly loose, shoot an 8-14 page editorial for their May/June online edition. 'Submissions must be highlighting Australian design. As a guide approximately 80% of garments and products featured should be from Australian creators.'

Here are the pics that I'm going to submit. I might make some changes but I leave it for a day or so then revisit prior to making my final decision.

The above image didn't fit my concept as I ran out of light so I shot the backgound with the light I wanted and merged that into the shot and the below shots as can be seen by the two vesions.

Advertising inspiration

Another one I like. I love the innocence to these shots. All work except for the crosswalk shot, it just doesn't seem to fit in with the theme of the shoot.

Scarlett Johansson by Peter Linbergh

I love this shoot. The gritty feel and the lighting really work for me. I think the black and white works in this shoot and the choice of clothing compliments both Scarlett and the black and white style.

Interesting fashion advertising campaign

This advertising campaign stood out for me. I think it is because the colours are so bold and the props are so ridiculous that the campaign works. I find the clothes and shoes stand out and of course the scenarios make you have a second look, the goal of any campaign.

Aviation Editorial Inspiration

For my editorial shoot I wanted a 1930-40's style shoot and it just happens that Dick Smith lives just around the corner from me. He has a runway and a couple 1940's airfield club houses and maintenance hanger complete with an aircraft of the same era. After my initial idea I had refined it to doing an editorial on a young womans day on the set of a 1940's aviation film.

After making this decision I've now found three editorial shoots based around early aviation. One shoot is based around the aviation exploits of Amelia Earhart, one shot by Peter Lindbergh and just today another one popped up based on retro styling using vintage aircraft as sets as background.

Here is the Amelia shoot for Marie Claire. This shoot captures Amelia Earhart's spirit of adventure and I believe it does her justice. It is shot in a modern style with well crafted lighting and composition. It does not try to recreate shots of the era it is depicting and I don't think it needs to.

This shoot below doesn't have a story like the one above and as such does not appeal to my idea of an editorial. It is merely a fashion shoot with vintage aviation related props as background elements. I will try my hardest to keep my shoot from looking like this. I will certainly be using the shooting style as reference because the images a quite beautiful in their own right.

I love Peter Lindbergh's work and this is no exception. This reminds me of the photojournalism of the time and once again tells the story of the pioneer of woman's aviation. Great lighting, composition and use of black and white to recreate the moment in the modern world of digital photography.

I will be using all the shoots above and a few books on fashion in movies and the 1940's to assist me in making my editorial piece a into a wonderful story.
